In the Midst of Plenty...Dissent

The United States has undergone one of the longest periods of continuous economic growth in recent history. There is high employment, low inflation and consumer confidence in the economy. The stock market is strong and companies, particularly those involved with high technology are reaping enormous profits. Business investment in new technology continues unabated. And, wonder of wonders, even the Federal government may soon have a balanced budget and a diminished national debt.

What is wrong with this picture?

These economic gains aren't happening everywhere. Many small communities are in crisis as industries have moved or closed as a result of global competition.

Throughout this website, the underlying theme has been one of fair trade as opposed to free trade. By illustrating the problems of smaller communities through the example of Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia in dealing with industry losses, perhaps some understanding can be gained by those involved with trading issues.
